DIGITAL PRINTS

 ART YOU PRINT AT HOME

Do you? Would you? Would you really bother to purchase an art file, download it, unzip it and then print it out on the paper of your choice and then frame it and hang it?
Three Digital Prints of Michigan Carved in Wood
(This was a shop that I used to have at Etsy)

Or, would you take the downloaded file to a brick and mortor print shop like Staples, and have them print it for you? Or even easier, upload the file to an online printing shop and have them print it and send it to you? What is the purpose of all of that if it is already being sold as a print by the first company?

Or, wouldn't you just simply purchase the art from the site offering it as printed material. Already printed on the paper of your choice, with or without a frame and mat of your choice?

I suppose this is like anything else you spontaneously purchase, you don't intend to buy anything but something 'strikes your fancy' and you simply must have it RIGHT NOW!

So, you buy a digital file, and art print or prints at 8 x 10 or 8 x 8 or 12 x 12 size, so your home printer can handle the sizes! You put the paper in and preview your image first (always do this!!!) to make sure it's even on all sides, centered, enough room for 1/4" framing ... then to find you don't have enough ink.

Are you one who has fortunately purchased a professional printer with the capability of printing large format prints and have tons of archival inks ready! Lucky you! I'd say you probably sell printed art then, for the money of all of the above, I sure would to make it pay for itslf!

I've been pondering creating digital prints for my Etsy shop for some time now. For years, in fact! I used to sell my digital prints in 8 x 10 sizes and 8 x 8 sizes. I sold more stationery, letterheads than art prints. I do have one Halloween art print there, nobody even sees it!

Now Zazzle offers digital downloads for their posters and I find that if they offer them already printed, why would you spend more money on printing something yourself? Why not just buy it already beautifully printed on the best archival paper available and with borders so you have room for framing?

So, that is where I'm at, still wondering if I should offer digital prints in my Etsy shop or not. Oh yes, Etsy has this thing now that if you do offer digital prints, they offer various printing companies.

ORIGINAL ART OR PRINT

I'm not sure if I am for or against digital prints for myself, but I'm thinking that if I did see something that I just had to have on my wall or framed, and I wanted it right now, I'd bother with purchasing it and printing it at home.

I would always much rather have an original of anything, for the value side of it. Usually artists make prints of their work, but not all of them agree to digital file copies, for printing.

Today, with everyone being 'an artist' it is easy to see why folks want to sell originals and only have limited editions of the scanned prints of their artwork.

That is truly my heartfelt goal. I'd really love to get back into painting and then selling my originals as prints, on archival paper and only having limited editions. I would keep the originals though. For me! I love art. I love my art and I love making art! So glad I am able to.

Would you consider being an artist who sells your work as digital downloads? Would you only create the digital download files with your artwork that you consider not to be your best? What are your thoughts of selling digital download prints?

PRINTABLES

 PRINTABLES

Printables generally can be anything that you download off the internet and print on paper, any kind of paper or even cloth. Printables in specific are usually paper projects like calendars, planner pages, stickers, recipes, stationery and even designs for cloth. Above is a printable note pad template, you print and cut and then after you adhere together or not, you can color the note pages as you will! It's a fun thing to do, coloring while you make notes and lists!

Easter is almost here and it's time to create some cute greeting cards, coloring pages, treat bags, treat bag toppers, games, dolls and more that are easy to print and cut. That is the secret to great printables, that they are easy to cut and use.

SCRAPBOOKING

 SCRAPBOOKING

Do you scrapbook? Journal? Are you a 'planner addict'? Do you digitally scrapbook and then print your pages out? Do you buy real paper, make real 'layouts' and die cut all of your frames and embellishments? Or do you do a little of both? Do you purchase clip art and background papers?

When I first started designing for an online shop, which was Etsy, I saw that people were selling ephemera, collage sheets, old newspaper pages, vintage photos, vintage wallpaper scraps, vintage book covers, patterns from inside old books, all sorts of florals, frames, 'clusters' of flowers and buttons, scraps of string, just anything you could scan and sell as 'DIGITAL' downloads. What a variety!! I was in heaven! I had a lot to do!

I created repeating patterns and distressed look backgrounds, now they are called 'digital papers' and then made a kit with a variety of matching elements, like this one! This kit is not mine.

I LOVED making scrapbook pages, creating my own layered look with frames and all sorts of elements and making them as realistic looking as possible.

One of the concerns of this new way to create family photo albums was the ability to print correctly. Printing was a real problem! Most people didn't know how to adjust their printers to print to the edge, or 'full bleed' and a lot of printers back then DIDN'T!! Also, we couldn't print 12" x 12" pages!

Digital Scrapbook 'Quick Page' by DoggiNo

Today it is very different, MUCH better! We have printers that are just like professional ones, they print beautifully, print to the edge, print huge sizes, the digital scrapbooking people were happy!

With that came die cutting machines. There was only one or two way back then, AccuCut was one of them. I went to a show in Chicago and visited their booth and they handed out samples of the cutest die cut items, including a folding paper coin purse. Oh my gosh! The things we can do with die cutting, folding paper into objects, wow!!!!

HALLOWEEN PRINTABLE
Printables became popular, you print out on paper of your choice and then cut out with scissors. This was before you could simply have your die cut machine trace and then cut. Cricut has the ability to do that, I believe. Silhouette may have that ability to do so too. I enjoy cutting paper by hand.

Cutting paper by hand has started a new trend call 'collage fodder' and of course there are 'collage fodder challenges' and giveaways and all sorts of FODDER things!! Fodder is made by simply drawing, painting, making a design and then cutting it out and using it on something else. I know, can't keep up with the latest trends. The terms all change for everything as we go too. It's a lot to keep up with, so ... I don't. I do my thing.

So here are some cute embellishments you can add to your scrapbook pages, create stickers or print on -t-shirts or totes!

PRINTABLES

What are Printables?

The term 'printables' applies to SO many digital downloads, so many things can be printed and used to create something else or leave as is.

I started using the term many years ago, when I first started selling my digital art files at Etsy. I considered everything I made as printables, because they are. Everything I create can be printed out either before or after designing something.

Free Printable Easter Treat Bag

But mostly, this term is used for printable items that we will use to either write on or create something with including; calendars, cards, activity sheets, wall art, coloring pages, journal pages, note pad sheets, planner pages, stationery, recipe cards, labels, tags, stickers, rolodex cards, scrapbook pages, bullet journals, teaching tools, even some fabrics, just so many things are considered PRINTABLES!

HAVE you looked at the term at Google lately? I have over the years, first there were not so many articles about printables, now there is SO much information, YouTube videos, blogs, IG posts, Facebook pages, so many businesses that specialized in selling ONLY printables.

Do you have a new idea for a printable? Do you use them? Do you think you would use them if they were free? Do you search for 'free printables'?

I do have some at my Etsy shop now, but I will be making some EASTER printables in the very near future.

YOU can get some freebies from my blog here, just click on the right hand side where it says FREEBIES|PAPER CRAFTS and DIGITAL DOWNLOADS.
